Blood Typing vs Comprehensive Blood Panel: Which to Choose
By Novum Performance & Longevity Wellness Center | October 29, 2026
Appointment-only in Ellicott City, MD | Free parking | Card payments + digital wallets
Our Blood Typing appointment is 15 minutes and $30, and it’s the right pick when you only need your ABO and Rh blood group. A comprehensive blood panel makes more sense when you want a bigger picture, things like organ function, nutrients, hormones, inflammation markers, and other data you can actually act on.
If you’re in Ellicott City, especially around the Dorsey’s Search and Dorsey Hall area, we see this decision a lot. Some people just need a blood type test checked off. Others want answers for energy, sleep, body composition, recovery, or ongoing symptoms. And plenty of people do best pairing the two.
Blood typing vs a blood panel: what each test actually tells you
A blood typing test (also called blood grouping or a blood group test) identifies your ABO type (A, B, AB, or O) and your Rh factor (positive or negative). That’s it, and that simplicity is the point. You’re getting a specific answer to a specific question: “What’s my blood type?”
A comprehensive blood panel is a broader set of labs. Depending on what you’re trying to solve, it can include metabolic markers, liver and kidney function, lipids, blood sugar markers, iron status, thyroid markers, inflammation markers, vitamin levels, and sometimes hormone and nutrient testing.
Quick way to decide: Blood typing answers one identity question (ABO/Rh). A full blood panel answers “how is my body functioning right now?”
The trade-offs that matter: accuracy, cost, turnaround, and what you can do with results
Accuracy and reliability
Lab-based blood typing is fast and typically very accurate. That’s what you want if you’re making an important decision around compatibility, pregnancy-related planning, or medical documentation. At-home blood type kits exist, but the reliability can vary. We’re big fans of “do it right once, ” especially if you plan to reference your result long-term.
Cost and time
Blood typing is usually cheaper and quicker. With us, it’s a 15-minute appointment and $30. A comprehensive panel costs more and can take longer to come back, but you’re paying for a larger set of answers.
How actionable the results are
A blood type result is useful, but it’s not a performance plan. A full panel tends to be more actionable because it can point to patterns that affect energy, recovery, sleep, inflammation, and body composition.
People come to Novum because they like getting real direction. As one client put it, they loved “seeing inside” their body and knowing how it’s functioning on a cellular level.
"I've seen great results from my treatments so far and feel wonderful. I love \"seeing inside\" my body and knowing how it's functioning on a cellular level."

Which test fits your goal right now (and when pairing both is smartest)
Choose blood typing if:
- You truly just need your ABO and Rh documented.
- You’re thinking about donor or transfusion compatibility.
- You’re adding it to an assessment because you don’t know your type and you want accurate reporting.
Choose a comprehensive blood panel if:
- You want deeper, clinical-level data for performance or longevity planning.
- You’re trying to get to the bottom of ongoing symptoms, not just check a box.
- You want numbers you can track over time, then adjust with a plan.
A lot of our Dorsey’s Search and Dorsey Hall clients end up pairing tests, especially if they like having clear baselines and then building a targeted plan. If you’re already coming in for other modalities, you can also explore our oxygenation and cellular performance therapy overview to see how people stack data with therapies.
Why people book Blood Typing at Novum in Dorsey’s Search (and how we keep it easy)
We’re not a “one test and goodbye” kind of place. People come in because they want answers, then they want a plan they can actually follow. Our team spends time explaining what we’re doing and why, and we’re used to questions. A lot of first visits start with a quick tour of the office so you’re not guessing what’s behind each door.
You’ll also notice we’re built for real schedules. We’re appointment-only, we keep the draw time short, and we’re easy to get to for people coming off Route 29, Route 108, or Old Annapolis Road. If you live near Long Gate Shopping Center or Dorsey’s Search Village Center, you’re close enough to knock this out without turning it into a whole-day project.
"Karan is awesome. She’s super knowledgeable on cutting edge longevity treatments and also super nice. I booked a 30min session, which turned into 2 hour consultation (with no additional charge)."
